We design, implement, and evaluate a center-based parenting intervention program that is integrated with existing infrastructure in rural China. The two-year trial was conducted in 22 less developed counties in a northwestern province of China and targeted 1,720 children between the ages of 6 and 36 months across 100 villages. We find that the center-based parenting intervention significantly improved the cognitive and language skills of children in the treatment by 0.26 SD and 0.23 SD, respectively. Evidence suggests the primary mechanisms driving the effects are an increase in parental/caregiver time investments in their children as well as caregivers’ improved attitudes towards and perspectives on childcare. Our results show that center-based parenting can be an effective approach that is low cost, labor-saving and easy to scale up. Our study also offers policy insights for improving human capital and wellbeing, especially for developing regions where the government has limited financial resources and labor force.

陸毅，清華大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)管理學(xué)院中信講席教授，經(jīng)濟(jì)系系主任，入選國家級人才計劃，北京市卓越青年科學(xué)家，首屆中國青年經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家獎和首屆孫尚清發(fā)展知識研究與交流青年學(xué)者獎獲得者，2024年度全球前2%頂尖科學(xué)家（經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)領(lǐng)域），2007年獲香港大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)工商學(xué)院博士學(xué)位，曾執(zhí)教于香港大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)工商學(xué)院和新加坡國立大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)系。主要從事中國經(jīng)濟(jì)的研究工作，重點關(guān)注經(jīng)濟(jì)增長、公共財政和全球經(jīng)濟(jì)治理等，迄今在American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy，Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Public Economics，Journal of Development Economics, 以及《中國社會科學(xué)》、《經(jīng)濟(jì)研究》、《管理世界》等國內(nèi)外一流經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)雜志發(fā)表論文數(shù)十篇。獲第八屆高等學(xué)校科學(xué)研究優(yōu)秀成果獎（人文社會科學(xué)）等獎項，主持社科基金重大項目和自科基金面上項目等，多項資政報告獲得中央領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人肯定性批示和中央部委采納。
